While not as impressive as all the old monuments, this area does give you something of a sense of Egypt outside the pharaohs. The hanging church was particularly interesting.
Nice place and kept very clean. Easy access from the metro. Don't miss the hanging church and synagogue.
Get a guide - unless you're an expert in history and Egypt in general, you will learn pretty amazing things from a guide - I recommend FTS travels - they know what they're doing. And arrange it in advance!
Wander through Old Cairo and visit various shops, ancient synagogue and ancient churches. Worth some time
